There are many symptoms related to our bowel which can lead to dysfunction that can greatly affect your quality of life. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is evidence-based for helping improve your symptoms and confidence. A bowel-health assessment covers; diet, exercise, bowel habits, positioning, medication and more which together can really assist in symptom management / resolution. Symptoms of bowel dysfunction, which physiotherapy can help with, are the following:

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhoea

  • Rectal prolapse (rectocele and full thickness)

  • Management of intussusception

  • Anal pain

  • Levator Ani Spasm or Proctalgia Reflux

  • Leaking wind, unexpectedly

  • Bowel urgency

  • Staining on underwear or repetitive wiping clean

  • Bowel (faecal) incontinence

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

  • Anismus / dyssynergia

  • Low lying pelvic floor muscles

Self-management of these conditions can include the use of trans-anal irrigation which I can discuss with you in our consultation should this be clinically relevant to your symptoms. I worked within a highly specialist Functional Bowel Clinic within the NHS for 5 years so am confident with all presentations. If you have been a colorectal surgeon, you may have underwent a proctogram or ano-rectal physiology testing and we can also make sense of these results and tailor your rehabilitation accordingly baring these findings in mind.
